Location On the old Allmon farm off Interstate 70, exit 13. Follow Rt. 481 South approx. 2.8 miles. Turn left onto 2032 and go approx. 0.5 miles. Cemetery is on left where an old brick chimney from a former house stands. Cemetery is about 100 yds. up hill.

Background This is a small family cemetery that was once on the Allmon farm. It is now hidden in the trees, halfway up a hill, out of sight of the road. It is a difficult climb through the thicket. The stones are covered with periwinkle and difficult to find. It has not been used for over a hundred years.

Location Glyde, near Scenery Hill, North Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co., PA.

Background This is a fairly small cemetery. Originally the cemetery was behind a log church and this site is marked with a plaque. some of the oldest tombstones are inscribed in German and date from the very early 1800s. They are near the plaque marking the original log church. The present church is a large brick edifice that stands to the northeast of the cemetery. The cemetery is still in use.

Turn left at LR60285 (the second road after Rt. 40 intersection). It is approx. 0.5 miles to the church which is on the left.

Background There are approx. 9 burials in this cemetery. The first recorded burial was of Mary Moody (d. 1794), wife of Alexander Moody. Other burials are: Joseph Binns, (d. 1833); Alice Morris Binns, wife, (d. 1858); Morris Binns, son, (d. 1828); Samuel Binns, (d. 1846). There are at least 4 unmarked graves thought to be from the Joseph Townsend family, Isaac Jackson family, and Joseph Boyers family. These 3 families also resided on this farm.

Background This is the cemetery of St. Jerome's Catholic Church of Charleroi. About 5 yrs. ago, the Catholic Diocese merged the 4 Catholic churches in Charleroi into one church, which now resides in the old St. Jerome's church building.

More Information Directions - Take Interstate 70 to the Speers Exit. At end of ramp. make left onto Twilight Hollow Rd. Proceed to T in road. At stop sign, make left. Krutz garage will be on left. Make left onto Calvary Rd. after passing garage. This is a little road. Proceed up hill a short distance and look to right. You will not see the cemetery but you will see an old gate. Make a sharp right passing through the gate and proceeding up a steep hill into cemetery. The cemetery is large and divided into 3 sections. For locations of particular graves, it is a good idea to call the church before visiting the cemetery.

Background This is a small cemetery with many unmarked graves. There are gravestones that have GAR markers on them and flags. There is also a stone in memory of all those who are unknown and buried here from 1900 - 1980. Cemetery is in fair condition and is known as a "colored" cemetery. The land for this cemetery was donated by Mr. William Davis and was used by the Payne A.M.E. Church in Canonsburg after their cemetery was filled.

Location From the junction of Rt. 88 & 136 in New Eagle, Washington Co., go west 3.6 miles - turn left - go 1.2 miles from intersection to red dog road on right - go .2 miles up red dog to find the cemetery located on top of a knoll on the right.

Background The land for this cemetery and church (which no longer exists) was sold to the Presbyterian and German Lutheran Societies on 18 Jan. 1800 by Christian Stockers (Stacher). In the yard of this old church is a plaque on a granite monument that reads "On this site the First Lutheran Conference west of the Allegheny Mountains convened Oct. 18, 1812. This was the first of a series of annual conferences that led to the organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and other states at Somerset, O. Sept. 14, 1818. Unveiled 31 Aug. 1924. Erected by the Historical Society of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and other states."

Background At one time this church and cemetery were known as the Pigeon Creek United Presbyterian Church and Cemetery. (There is a another historic church close by called the Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Church and Cemetery in Dunningsville.) The cemetery is to the left of the church on a hill and can be easily seen from the road. Background The cemetery was originally located where the present church sits. It was next to the original church. The church was founded in 1798 by early settlers of the German Lutheran and Dutch Presbyterian Church. The first burial was on Sep. 29, 1817 and the last burial was on Oct. 3, 1892.

Background According to a tombstone in the cemetery, the first acre of land for this cemetery was donated by William Howe on June 2, 1820. William Howe was buried just inside the entrance behind the church when he died Aug. 15, 1820. The cemetery is large and still in use. The oldest stones are directly behind the church and to the right of the church. There is a war memorial in front of the church listing the names of those who fought. Up the hill to the left of the church is a building with veterans' graves around it.

Location Corner of Swihart & Kelso Rds., in Cecil Twp. off Rt. 980 N. Take 980 N. out of Canonsburg for about 4 miles. At the crest of the hill about 1/4 mi. past Sherwood Valley Pools, make a left onto Swihart Rd. Cemetery is 4/10 of a mile on the right.

Background Miller's Run Church is one of the frontier churches in Washington Co. The congregation was formed about 1793 and met in private homes or in a tent on the present church grounds. In 1800, a log church was built. In 1835 the present brick church was constructed. Regular services were last held in 1896. The church and cemetery are maintained by the Miller's Run Cemetery Association. The church and cemetery may be toured. The caretaker, Irwin Hamilton, lives next door to the church and will unlock the church and keeps it unlocked on weekends in warm weather. There is a register of the known burials at the front of the church.

Location 5 miles north of Canonsburg off 980 N. After passing Sherwood Valley Pools, turn left onto Swihart Rd. Proceed .8 mile. Turn right onto Bishop Rd. Cemetery is 1.2 miles on right.

Background This cemetery was the burial ground of the Miller's Run Reformed Presbyterian Church, also known as the Covenanter Church, which was formed in 1808. The cemetery stands at the original site of the church but the church was dismantled and moved piece by piece to Rt. 50 in Cecil so their work would be among the coal miners. The church and cemetery are no longer used today. The cemetery was recently restored by the Millers Run Grange in Cecil. There are approximately 120 burials. The first burial was in 1822 and the last approx. 1955.

Background The Mt. Herman Baptist Church was founded in 1786. It is probably the second oldest Baptist church west of the Allegheny Mts. The first members were of the Bane, Sutton, Denman and Woodruff families and others. The church and cemetery sit on a portion of land that was originally owned by Jacob Bane called "Bane's Fancy". More Information This cemetery was researched by Helen Durbin in 1982. Helen added several names which were not on the original lists in Citizen's Library, Washington, Washington County, Pa. Helen and her husband went over the cemetery after it was bulldozed over, climbing on all the stones and dirt, which were pushed over the hill. With a pick and shovel, they were able to add 65 names which were not on original lists.

Background There is a marker located by the roadside in front of the present church building that says: NORTH TEN MILE BAPTIST CHURCH - OLDEST IN WASHINGTON COUNTY - FOUNDED IN 1773. The original minutes, Dec. 1, 1773. The church met on business the first time at Enoch Enoch's. The first log church was built in 1786. In 1792, a tract of land called "Big Rocks" was warranted to Samuel Moore and was patented to Daniel McFarland in 1793. McFarland sold 21 acres, 20 perches to the Baptists, by some called Anabaptists, for 2 pounds and 5 shillings in 1794.

More Information The founders of the early church were Enoch Enoch, Issachar Huntington, David Enoch, Alexander Keith, James Sutton, Joseph Bane and Samuel Parkhurst. The cemetery is in 2 sections and is large and still in use.

Background The cemetery was taken over by the California borough in the 1940s and all of the old gravestones were removed and a grey granite memorial was erected. It is inscribed with all the readable names taken from the old stones and dates go from 1826 to 1945. There are 4 columns of names including 3 veterans of the War of 1812 and 25 veterans of the Civil War.

Location Vanceville, Somerset Twp., Washington Co., PA. To reach cemetery from Vanceville, take SR 2019 east. The cemetery is on the left just before Somerset School and across from Bethlehem Mine #60.

Background This small cemetery once stood beside the Pigeon Creek Baptist Church in Vanceville. The original church was founded in 1803 and worship was held in a tent on Henry McDonough's farm. Solomon Huffman donated the land for a church in 1830 and a log church was built. In 1858, a brick church replaced the log church. The church fell into disuse as the Bentleyville Baptist Church grew. The church was torn down, probably in the 1930s. The tombstones are from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s. Some of the tombstones reported in the book, Pigeon Creek Baptist Church by Lyle Brooks Watson, can no longer be found.

Background "The Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Church was founded by John McMillan, August 24, 1775. It is the oldest church west of the Monongahela River. The first church built of logs was located in the cemetery near the Revolutionary War interments. The current structure was erected in 1824 from clay bricks made on the site. Old Redstone Presbytery was organized nearby in the cabin of John Stevenson on September 19, 1781."

Background This graveyard is one of the oldest in the county. The South Buffalo Presbyterian Church was formed about 1800 at the site of the graveyard. In 1887, it was removed to Claysville and was called the Claysville Presbyterian Church. Many of the old stones are crumbled now, some barely above the ground and many unreadable. Many graves were also removed to the Claysville Cemetery.

Background This cemetery is no longer in use but was the burial ground of the Speer Spring Associated Reformed Congregation (Seceder)which later moved and became the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, aka Greenside Church. First interment was in 1834 and interments were being made as late as 1937. There is one Revolutionary War soldier buried here. The church and cemetery were named "Speers Spring" because the church worshiped in a tent at the foot of a hill on the Speer farm where a spring ran.

It was replaced with a stone church in 1810. a brick church was built in 1857 and the present brick church was built in 1872. The cemetery is large and is still in use. The oldest stones are directly behind the church and date from the middle 1800s.

Background This cemetery was once the site of the Episcopal Church in Washington Co. On the land donated by Edward & Elizabeth McComas West, a log church was built in 1791. Until about 1862, various buildings on the site housed different denominations. The site has been partially restored and is now in the care of St. Mary's of Charleroi. This cemetery is very small and the tombstones are from the early to mid 1800s. It is well maintained.

Location Ridge Rd., south of Rt. 40 at Centerville in Centerville Borough. Centerville Borough was organized from parts of E. Bethlehem and W. Pike Run Twps.

Background Large cemetery that is still used today. It originally belonged to the Society of Friends (Quakers) whose meetings started in 1790 and ended in 1864. The cemetery is the site of the Westland Quaker Meeting House. Many of the Quaker graves are unmarked because Quakers did not believe in marking their graves.
